Asbestos Removal – Derby’s museum and library close for repairs
Two of Derby’s public buildings are closing for refurbishment for two weeks. Asbestos is being removed from the roof at the Museum and Art Gallery, in the Strand, and a new roof and lighting is being installed.
The Central Library in Wardwick is also being shut while scaffolding is erected to allow repairs to its historic lantern roof to be carried out. The closures take place from Monday until 1 November.
The cost of the museum works will be around £820,000. A city council spokesman said this year’s Derby City Open exhibition would not take place, but would return in 2011.
At the library, a temporary counter will be in place while the £84,000 repairs are carried out. During the closure, customers can use any other Derby library to return and borrow books, said the council.
