Why would you need our Analytical Services?
Analytical services can be categorised into two main types;
(i) analysis of bulk samples for asbestos fibres and
(ii) analysis of air samples for measurement of respirable fibres.
These tests can be undertaken to determine if asbestos fibres are present and the concentration of fibres in the air. CAR 2006 requires employers to prevent the exposure of their employees to asbestos

Redhills (part of Silverdell PLC), Redhills has extended the scope of its UKAS Accreditation for testing and inspection of asbestos to include two more of its regional offices.
Leading asbestos and environmental consultancy, Redhills recently announced extending the scope of its UKAS Accreditation for asbestos inspection and testing services to their two offices in Glasgow and Newcastle. The offices were opened recently by the industry leading provider of environmental consultancy services across the asbestos, legionella and hazardous materials sectors, to expand their nationwide coverage across the UK.

We are pleased that both offices have been set up so efficiently and gained the required UKAS Accreditation so quickly.”
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 (CAR 2006) and more specifically Regulation 4: Duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic properties sets a legal requirement for owners and occupiers of non-domestic buildings to carry out a suitable assessment to determine whether asbestos is present or liable to be present. Accreditation by UKAS means that evaluators i.e. testing and calibration laboratories, certification and asbestos inspection bodies have been assessed against internationally recognised standards to demonstrate their competence, impartiality and performance capability.
Retail giant Marks and Spencer and two of its contractors were found guilty today of failing to protect customers, staff and workers from the possibility of being exposed to asbestos during major refurbishment works at two of its stores.
The clothing and food store was subject to a three-month trial at Winchester Crown Court on charges of failing to ensure all steps were taken to prevent the deadly fibres from being unleashed in the shops.
The management is claimed to have been more concerned about the works being “unsightly” and “interfering with the shopping experience” of customers, the court heard.
The prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) related to works carried out at the company’s stores in Reading, Berkshire, and Bournemouth, Dorset.
The trial heard that construction workers at the two stores removed asbestos-containing materials that were present in the ceiling tiles and elsewhere.
But M&S did not allocate sufficient time and space for the removal of the asbestos-containing materials at the Reading store, the court was told.
The contractors had to work overnight in enclosures on the shop floor, with the aim of completing small areas of asbestos removal before the shop opened to the public each day, the court heard.
The HSE alleged that M&S failed to ensure that work at Reading complied with the appropriate minimum standards set out in legislation and approved codes of practice.
After nearly four days of deliberations, the jury found M&S guilty of two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 of failing to ensure the health and safety of its staff and others at the Reading store.
Co-defendants Willmott Dixon Construction Limited, of Hertfordshire, was found guilty of contravening sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at the Bournemouth store.
And Manchester-based company PA Realisations Ltd (formerly Pectel Ltd), was found guilty of contravening regulation 15 of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 at the Reading store.

In this month’s column, Fireco, supplier of fire safety products, systems and services, warns of the continuing dangers of asbestos in the workplace and the implications of failing to manage it properly
If you were asked what the single greatest cause of work-related deaths is, what would your guess be? Well, it may surprise you to know that in the UK it’s asbestos, which is responsible for around 4000 deaths a year.
That may seem like a staggering number of deaths from something you’d think was banished a long time ago. But asbestos was only fully banned from use in 1999, so if your premises were built or refurbished before then, there is a possibility that asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), commonly used in floor tiles, pipe lagging, Artex, fuse boxes, rainwater pipes and central heating systems, could still be present.
The danger arises when asbestos is damaged through bumps and scrapes or destroyed by cutting, drilling or ripping, releasing airborne fibres which can be lethal. However, if properly controlled and maintained, there is no reason why materials containing asbestos cannot remain in use for many years.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 cover the ‘duty to manage’ asbestos in non-domestic premises by owners and managers and others with relevant responsibility. Landlords also have a duty of care to ensure that asbestos is managed in their properties, especially in communal areas.
Failure to comply with the asbestos regulations may mean that a prohibition notice is placed on your buildings – effectively closing down your workplace until it is confirmed as safe. The duty-holder of a commercial property could also be liable for prosecution under the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations.
