Among the changes made in the updated Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 was the inclusion, within Regulation 10, of a requirement for specified groups to receive asbestos awareness training. This wil impact upon Duty Holders who may be responsible for ensuring that visiting contractors are properly trained.

Thames Laboratories offers a range of training options suitable for all personnel that may come into contact with asbestos during the course of their work or who have responsibility for managing personnel that work with or may be exposed to asbestos.

The IATP is a not for profit organisation, in the process of obtaining Not for Profit Trust status, whose sole concern is to provide a dynamic and interactive link between those seeking asbestos training and the companies that can provide it.

The IATP website only lists asbestos training providers that have submitted documentary evidence confirming their compliance with the regulations; including independent, external audits where necessary.  The details of these audits are included with each training provider’s listings, to allow clients to conduct their own checks, should they so wish.

The IATP is a partner organisation in the HSE’s Asbestos: Hidden Killer campaign and will be just as involved in the forthcoming campaign to raise awareness of the Duty to Manage asbestos in premises.

Why might I need Asbestos Training?

The asbestos regulations are very clear that all persons who are liable to disturb asbestos while carrying out their normal everyday work, or who may influence how this work is carried out, will need some form of asbestos training.

What types of Asbestos Training are there?

IATP training providers offer not only the first three types of asbestos training, as stipulated by the asbestos regulations, but also an additional range of courses, including e-learning; designed to meet the needs of every client.

Safety specialist firm Boss Training is celebrating the relaunch of its national asbestos awareness training service by offering free places to clients.

Asbestos is the biggest cause of UK work-related deaths, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

Boss is holding half-day UKATA-registered awareness courses in Leeds, which can be tailored to the needs of companies.

Managing director Andrew Murphy said: “Because the use of brown and blue asbestos was only banned in 1985, and white asbestos as late as 1999, there are still many buildings which were built prior to those dates where asbestos can be found.

“Exposure is therefore still a real risk when workers disturb the fabric of buildings.

“The course includes written and oral presentations, and focuses on providing clients with information about the properties and types of asbestos and how to avoid exposure risks.

Companies and individuals interested in attending the asbestos course and taking advantage of the special offer can contact Boss on 0845 680 0495.

HSEIf you are an electrician, plumber, joiner, window fitter, roofer, IT, or work within the trades and even the DIY enthusiast you may be affected by asbestos exposure.  How? Properties built before 2000 may or quite probably contain asbestos. Asbestos insulation board (AIB) used for insulation, asbestos cement, used for roofing, asbestos tape, soffits, lots of asbestos containing products are within our homes and our workplaces

Knowing how to identify products that may contain asbestos and having the skills to work on them safely without causing exposure to asbestos fibres is the simplest way to combat a deadly product that HSE estimates kills 20 tradesmen a week and an estimated 90,000 every year worldwide.
