Around 75 per cent of Britain’s schools contain asbestos. With the right support and training, schools can manage asbestos effectively
Written by Joanne Lewis, chair of the education group for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health
Learning to manage the risks in day-to-day activities is part of a good education. School pupils learn how to handle a wide variety of risks, from the busy road where a crossing or lollipop warden helps pupils to cross safely to the science lab where safety spectacles stop chemicals splashing into students’ eyes.
When the danger is hidden and its effects aren’t apparent until years later, it becomes more menacing and more difficult to manage – a monster in the cupboard waiting to pounce. Asbestos is just such a monster, prevalent in many of our schools as well as domestic properties. But with knowledge and effective management, we can tame it.
If you are an electrician, plumber, joiner, window fitter, roofer, IT, or work within the trades and even the DIY enthusiast you may be affected by asbestos exposure. How? Properties built before 2000 may or quite probably contain asbestos. Asbestos insulation board (AIB) used for insulation, asbestos cement, used for roofing, asbestos tape, soffits, lots of asbestos containing products are within our homes and our workplaces
Knowing how to identify products that may contain asbestos and having the skills to work on them safely without causing exposure to asbestos fibres is the simplest way to combat a deadly product that HSE estimates kills 20 tradesmen a week and an estimated 90,000 every year worldwide.
A building firm has been fined after refurbishment work triggered the temporary closure of country club near Darlington over fears of exposure to asbestos.
Nationwide Building Contractors Limited – which is registered at 1640 Parkway, Solent Business Park, Whiteley, Fareham, Hampshire – was today fined a total of £4,500 at Darlington Magistrates’ Court over the incident. The comopany was found guilty, in its absence, of breaching Regulations 5, 11 and 16 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, between 7 January and 6 March 2008.
