Removal of asbestos insulation board roof soffits from a teaching block at the Harris Academy for Girls, London.
About the project:
The project brief was to safely remove the asbestos insulation board soffits from the eaves of the main roof to the teaching block.
The project was for ISG who had been commissioned directly by the academy to refurbish the building. The main refurbishment scheme had to be completed during the summer break, so it was imperative that works were fully considered and planned to satisfy the programme.
Project challenges:
The project was undertaken in a educational environment and it was vital that the works were carried out to the highest standards with the asbestos being completely removed and the area left ’spotlessly’ clean.
The asbestos removal was the first ‘construction’ activity on site and any delay would impact upon the overall programme. Enclosures were constructed in an external environment and had to be robust enough to withstand adverse weather conditions.

Removal of asbestos insulation debris from within major high street retail outlet in the heart of London’s West End.
About the project:
The project involved the removal of asbestos insulation debris from pipework and low level wall surfaces. The asbestos debris is likely to emanate from a previous asbestos removal project carried out to a poor standard. The debris was identified during a refurbishment and demolition survey carried out in advance of the shop re-fit work commencing.
Project challenges:
This project was undertaken in the heart of London’s West End on one of the busiest shopping streets in the country.
All plant and equipment was delivered outside normal working hours to minimise contact with the general public. Waste was also removed from the building on an out-of-hours ‘wait and load’ basis. Deconstruct Operatives had to ‘transit’ to the decontamination unit that was sited on the adjacent road, whilst wearing their respiratory protective equipment (RPE). This required careful planning and timing was of the essence so as to avoid unnecessary alarm to the public.

Removal of asbestos containing materials from occupied high rise residential buildings in Shepherds Bush, London.
About the project:
Over the course of 6 months Deconstruct teams were engaged in the removal of asbestos insulation board, duct cladding and wall panels throughout the residential tower blocks at the Charecroft Estate.
The cladding and panelling was typically located in kitchens and hallways, which meant that residents had to leave their properties for the day to enable tented enclosures to be constructed. Enclosures were formed, asbestos removed, enclosures tested and site cleared each day to allow the resident to return to a safe environment that same day.
Project challenges:
The work was undertaken inside occupied flats containing resident’s personal property so our works had to be carried out in a neat and tidy manner, ensuring that no damage was caused.
Our trusted teams of Operatives prepared the work areas with due consideration for the decoration within the properties. The asbestos removal operation had to be completed to exacting standards as there could be no risk of asbestos contamination into the property.

Removal of asbestos pipe insulation and asbestos contamination from throughout the loft space of the Drayton Court Hotel
About the project:
The Hotel was undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment programme. During the refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey, extensive contamination was identified throughout the loft space.
The loft space was of traditional construction, built with sawn timber. The ceilings were lathe and plaster and the loft space was insulated with fibreglass quilt. All insulation had to be removed as contaminated waste, all timbers vacuumed and the lathe and plaster ceiling cleaned of all dust.
Project challenges:
The work within this environment was complicated due to restrictions on head height and tight spaces at the eaves. Access throughout the roof space was enabled through the use of Youngman boards spread across the joists. Meticulous care was taken not to stand on the lathe and plaster ceiling, as a hole would breach the enclosure and cause contamination into the underlying area.
There was no natural light or existing artificial light within the loft space, so it was necessary for our Operatives to install extensive task lighting to ensure that all contamination could be seen and cleaned.
Deconstruct were called in for the demolition of warehouse structure following a catastrophic fire at a tyre recycling centre in Croydon.
About the project:
Our first objective here was to assist the London Fire Brigade access the fire which continued to blaze under the collapsed roof structure.
Once the fire was extinguished, the resultant contaminated debris and waste was cleared from site before the remaining structures were then demolished and the site cleared for the re-construction phase.

Deconstruct were contracted for the installation of a secondary structural steel frame into Colt Data Centre, Acton.
About the project:
This project saw the installation of secondary steel frames into a live Data Centre to provide additional support to battery back up rooms located over live mechanical plant rooms.
The works required a clinical approach to the sensitive nature of the structure and emphasis on dust and vibration management was of extreme importance.
Using our experience of Asbestos Removal, we carried out a very successful installation that was both timely and safe.

Introduction of new structural lift and stair core, plus construction of a new 5th floor structure in Parliamentary district of Westminster.
About the project:
Deconstruct were contracted to demolish a former stair core within this four storey building and constructed a new reinforced concrete core from the basement to a new 5th floor level.
There were a number of key structural alteration packages carried out including removal of a secondary stair core and the introduction of new steel framing and slabs.
The introduction of an entire new mansard roof with all joisting and carcassing was also carried out.

Riots leave structures dangerous in Rye Lane, Deptford.
About the project:
These structures suffered extensive fire damage as a result of the street riots in London, August 2011. Adjoining structures appeared to be un-effected and so the aim was to demolish effected buildings whilst retaining adjoining premises.
Temporary works were designed and methods developed to ensure speedy access for adjoining neighbours to enjoy safe access back into their premises.

Structural alteration to re-configure stair and lift core in Chancery Lane, London.
About the project:
Deconstruct UK Ltd, assist with a structural alteration in Chancery Lane, London.
Deconstruct were contracted by Galliford Try to remove the existing roof structure and stair and lift core over six floors.
This involved the design and installation of significant temporary works which required fluid input from our designers as structures were opened up.
Chancery Lane is at the heart of the Law fraternity and the environmental impact of the works had to be assessed throughout the project duration.

Deconstruct called to support the London Fire Brigade to extinguish this substantial warehouse fire following disturbances in Enfield.
About the project:
Deconstruct UK Ltd, are called in for assistance after the Sony Enfield fire.
Following a massive fire this structure continued to smoulder for almost three weeks.
Due to the nature of the content of the warehouse and the fact the structure collapsed into itself, it prevented access for London Fire Brigade (LFB) to extinguish the flame.
Deconstruct provided specialist equipment to move collapsed structures, enabling LFB to access and douse the remaining hotspots.

New basement area to provide teaching areas (as part of a fundamental refurbishment plan) at St Patricks Church, Soho.
About the project:
Deconstruct has vast experience in demolition, they were called in for their services as part of a fundamental refurbishment plan.
Deconstruct created a new basement area under St Patricks Church. This involved MoLAS having a watching brief on excavation over structures preceding its construction dating back to 1778.
Creating the new basement included supporting structures and the creation of a basement area 22m by 9m wide to a depth of 4m. Other fundamental structural alterations were carried out to bring this historic structure firmly into the 21st century.

Deconstruct to make safe structures in Croydon following devastating riots.
About the project:
Deconstruct UK Ltd, provided their immediate response services to make ’safe’ the dangerous structures, after the Croydon riots.
The project involved eleven structures affected by fires following street riots in August 2011.
Numerous structures were left un-safe as a result of the fires and un-controlled collapses.
There was significant risk of contamination from asbestos debris and also live gas and electrical services located in the footpaths and alleys. Around 30 families were made homeless as a result of these fires and a number of others faced a wait to re-enter their adjoining premises.
Deconstruct were required to retain as much of the adjoining structures as possible and avoid collateral damage following the making safe of buildings clearly in need of planned demolition. The clear objective was to retain and return safe access to adjoining structures while opening this key road into and out of Croydon.

Carnaby Street redevelopment of 1950’s structure to provide new commercial and retail space to prime location.
About the project:
Deconstruct UK Ltd takes on a Carnaby Street project in order to provide new commercial and retail space.
This project on the busy pedestrianised Carnaby Street in London.
This presented numerous logistical issues, not least of all supplying materials to and from site.
The site had suffered bomb damage during WW2 and required extensive underpinning and ‘King Post Walling’ to retain the roadway (Carnaby St). Demolition works adjoined grade two listed structures with temporary support and therefore, had to be very versatile to accommodate the anomalies of structures from this era.
The works had to be coordinated into the bespoke restrictions working on the Carnaby Estate.
